About Paul – Creator of Popular Woodworking Plans
I’m Paul, and I’ve been in love with the craft of woodworking for as long as I can remember. It’s not just the scent of fresh-cut timber or the feel of a well-sanded surface — it’s the deep satisfaction that comes from turning a raw material into something functional, lasting, and genuinely beautiful. My journey with wood began in my grandfather’s workshop, a treasure trove of hand tools and half-finished projects where I learned that every piece of lumber has its own character, and that patience is the most important tool in the shop.
That early education shaped everything that came after. From building my first birdhouse as a kid, to taking on more complex furniture builds as an adult, to eventually reaching the point where I could read the grain of a board and anticipate how it would move and behave over time — woodworking became more than a hobby. It became a practice.
Why I started Popular Woodworking Plans
At some point I realised that most beginner woodworkers face the same problem I did early on — finding plans that were actually complete. Plans with accurate cut lists, realistic materials costs, step-by-step instructions that didn’t skip the tricky parts, and honest advice about what tools you really need versus what’s nice to have. Most of what I found online was vague, overly simplified, or written for someone who already knew what they were doing.
Popular Woodworking Plans started as my attempt to fix that. Every plan and guide on this site is written the way I wished someone had written it for me — with the specifics that actually matter included, and the filler left out. The site covers free woodworking plans for outdoor furniture, workshop builds, beginner projects, and skill-building guides for woodworkers at every level.
What you’ll find on this site
The core of Popular Woodworking Plans is the free project library — step-by-step build guides with full cut lists, materials lists, and detailed instructions. If you’re new to woodworking, the beginner guides walk you through choosing the right plan, selecting lumber, and understanding the basic joinery that most projects rely on. If you’re ready to build, the free woodworking plans library has outdoor furniture, workshop builds, and home projects at every difficulty level.
For those who want to go deeper — access to a much larger library of plans covering thousands of project types — I’ve also reviewed the most comprehensive plan collection available. Read the Ted’s Woodworking review to see whether the full 16,000-plan library is worth it for your level and interests.
I also publish guides on the skills that make every project easier — joinery techniques for beginners, choosing the right wood, and the essential tools every beginner needs. These aren’t affiliate-padded gear lists; they’re practical guides based on what actually matters when you’re getting started.
A few things about me beyond the workshop
When I’m not in the workshop, I spend most of my time with family. I’m also a golfer, though I’ll admit the handicap has never been as low as I’d like. There’s something similar about both pursuits — the combination of practice, patience, and the occasional moment where everything comes together perfectly and you think: yes, that’s it exactly.
